What AI is (and isn't)

AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini are chat apps that predict helpful text, images or speech from what you type. They are great at drafting, explaining, summarizing and brainstorming.

They are not always right. They can state wrong facts confidently (often called “hallucinating”), so check anything important, especially numbers, health, legal and money topics.

AI agents go one step further: they take actions for you, like sorting email or filling a spreadsheet. Start with an assistant first; agents come later in step 5.
